#82 (Oscar Predictions)

with 2 comments

Hello all,

I’d like to start off by saying that in my three years of avidly following the awards ceremony, this is easily the most difficult year to make choices but I have tried my hardest. Any questions/ criticisms please leave a comment or email me at, and I’d be happy to reply and discuss. The hardest two categories to decide were both of the writing ones, and the actress ones weren’t easy either (see my reasoning below). Thank you for reading, here goes…

Best Picture

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/ Nixon
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Will Win — The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Should Win — Slumdog Millionaire

Best Actor

Richard Jenkins, The Visitor
Frank Langella, Frost/ Nixon
Sean Penn, Milk
Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler

Will/Should Win — Mickey Rourke

Best Actress

Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie, Changeling
Melissa Leo, Frozen River
Meryl Streep, Doubt
Kate Winslet, The Reader

Will Win — Kate Winslet (it’s important to note that I have only see one of these movies but I have a good idea that Winslet is a favorite)

Best Supporting Actor

Josh Brolin, Milk
Robert Downey Jr., Tropic Thunder
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt
Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road

Will Win — Heath Ledger
Should Win — Michael Shannon (very hard decision)

Best Supporting Actress

Amy Adams, Doubt
Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis, Doubt
Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler

Will Win — Marisa Tomei (wild guess I really have no idea)
Should Win — Amy Adams (such a great performance)

Best Animated Feature Film

Kung-Fu Panda

Will Win — WALL-E

Tom Stern, Changeling
Claudio Miranda, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Wally Pfister, The Dark Knight
Roger Deakins & Chris Menges, The Reader
Anthony Dod Mantle, Slumdog Millionaire

Will/ Should Win –Anthony Dod Mantle (I’m always wrong about this category)

David Fincher, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Ron Howard, Frost/Nixon
Gus Van Sant, Milk
Stephen Daldry, The Reader
Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire

Will Win — David Fincher (as much as I disliked the film it was really well-made, see my review)
Should Win — I’d be fine with any of these outside of Daldry (have not seen The Reader yet)

Writing (Adapted)

Eric Roth, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
John Patrick Shanley, Doubt
Peter Morgan, Frost/Nixon
David Hare, The Reader
Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog Millionaire

Will Win — Slumdog Millionaire

Writing (Original)

Courtney Hunt, Frozen River
Mike Leigh, Happy-Go-Lucky
Martin McDonough, In Bruges
Dustin Lance Black, Milk
Andrew Stanton, WALL-E

Will Win — In Bruges (this is my dark horse this year, I really think it can surprise people)
