Thomas Balkcom’s Movies

Hello all

Most of you all are probably wondering why I am still awake at two o’clock in the morning and I honestly do not have an answer. I have been working on a paper that I could have easily finished last night/ this morning but decided to do it tonight and I am glad that I did. It’s one of my strongest papers I’ve written for a philosophy class (I guess I need to assert the fact that papers for philosophy classes are completely different beasts than papers for any other class) and I am hoping to do well on it.

I am giving up, rather postponing my acceptance to Blu-Ray. Since the format beat out its competitor HD-DVD, I have said that a switch (for me at least) is unnecessary. I’m sure most of you all are thinking that this is really of no importance and that there are far more important things I should be concerning myself. But the fact of the matter is this, movies reign supreme in my interests and the way in which I purchase/watch them should hold a certain amount of importance. I have said before that I cannot usually discern an enormous difference between Blu-Ray and standard DVDs that have been upscaled, and usually when I can (Wall-E being an exception) I am not happy with how “fake” it looks. When there is a noticeable difference it’s almost as if a particular part of the experience is taken away.

Until there is a considerable price drop (which I predict will happen in the next six months or so), I will start buying Blu-Rays but only for films that I think deserve high-def treatment and that I do not already own. Which means tomorrow, although I had budgeted to buy Quantum of Solace on Blu-Ray, I will be picking up the 2-disc standard instead.

Off to go study for some Spanish before I go to bed, thank you for reading. Reviews are coming by tomorrow night or Wednesday morning.
